Have you heard of the 365 project? It seems to be the buzz around the web lately. Many photographers have started a motivational project for themselves to take a photo each day of the year. This is a great way to document your year. And although I am a photographer & love what I do, I tend to take a lot of photographs in one day but not every day. But I have been inspired by a fellow blogger, Brandi Girl to create a less ambitious version of this and apply it to the Artful Bride Blog. Let's call it the 52 Colors of Weddings. Recycled Bride Reveals 2011 Hottest Sustainable Wedding Trends

Recently I received an email from Recycled Bride with 2011's hottest sustainable wedding day trends. I thought I would copy and paste these ideas into this post to help get the creative juices flowing on how to craft them into your own plans.

1. Diamonds are no longer a girl's best friend: Inspired by the sapphire ring that Prince William gave to Kate Middleton, alternative gemstones are all the rage for engagements in 2011. Brides will express their individual style and avoid conflict diamonds, with rings made of colored stones like sapphire, emerald and rubies with diamond alternatives like moissonite and synthetic diamonds. Another alternative to staying eco-friendly is to buy and shop local.

2. Chalkboard chic: Stylish slate signs will take the place of paper wedding programs, seating cards, and menus. Chalkboard signs can be made to look elegant and fancy or sweet and rustic, and can be created inexpensively at home using scavenged picture frames, chalkboard paint, and a little creativity. Reducing paper waste at your wedding never looked so stylish!

3. Weddings go local: Farmer's market menus and locally sourced favors and gifts are hip as can be this year. By doing their wedding shopping locally, couples minimize their carbon footprint, support their local economy, and delight guests with unique details they won't find elsewhere.

4. The "Staycation-moon": The popular staycation trend meets the honeymoon as couples skip the expense and carbon footprint associated with honeymoon travel in favor of romantic hometown adventures. Picture a week of museum visits, local theater and sporting events, park picnics, bucket-list adventures, and romantic dining -- no luggage required! Staycation not for you? 5. Intimate weddings: Weddings with small guest lists create less waste, offer more warmth, and give couples tons of flexibility when choosing a location. Intimate wedding celebrations range from elegant multi-course dinners in hotel penthouses to backyard barbecues featuring local bands and brews.

A backyard wedding may not sound appealing to those of you who live in the city (or just don't have much of a backyard). But there are other options (maybe a friend outside the city?) 6. Cocktail wedding dresses: Short wedding dresses are all the rage, and just about every major bridal designer has debuted a knee-length collection for 2011. A cocktail-length dress can be worn again, and many are just as formal and elegant as a long gown. Look for tons of short and sweet styles for sale on Recycled Brideright now. 7. Paperless Invitations: Electronic wedding communication is easier and prettier than ever, with companies like Glo offering stunning, interactive online save-the-dates, reply cards, invitations, and more. E-mail invites are less expensive than paper and help to reduce wedding waste.

I have a hard time with this trend. I am a big fan of all things paper. And something about receiving an invitation via email just isn't the same as getting a pretty invitation in the mail. (Let's face it - who doesn't like opening something that isn't a bill from the mail) So if you are like me, there are alternatives to the evite. Check out this past article on invitation company, Foosie Designs. (or go directly to her shop on etsy or website for more info. 8. Greener Gifting: Registries have gone green, with tons of new options for brides and grooms who want to receive ethically-made gifts and support the sustainable economy. Two of our faves are the Green Bride Guide Shop and The Knot's Gift Registry 360, which lets couples create one centralized registry with products from any online retailer they choose. And green donation gifts, like Bluebell Giving Cards, will be popular as both wedding presents and guest favors.

9. Face Forward: Long veils are sitting on the sidelines this year, as brides forgo them in favor of birdcage styles and unique hair accessories that can be worn again. Expect to see 2011's brides in headbands, vintage hair clips, flowers, and chic tiaras.

10. Flexitarian Feasts: Another trend inspired by Chelsea Clinton's veggie-conscious wedding is reducing the amount of meat on the menu. This year, more couples will offer vegetable- and grain-based meal options for their guests in an effort to save money and save the Earth.

11. Wedding Recycling: More brides, grooms, bridesmaids and guests than ever are shopping and selling on sites like RecycledBride.com. Smart users enjoy the financial, environmental, and social benefits of wedding recycling, and discover the joy of sharing, saving, and passing on treasured wedding items to other happy couples.

DIY Banners via My DIY Wedding Day

I found this easy DIY project today on My DIY Wedding Day:

" Tie a 12-inch piece of ribbon to the top of each letter so that it hangs secure and straight. Attach each of those ribbons to a super long rope between two trees or posts outdoors. Twist a string of large Christmas lights to the rope so that sparkles of light are in between some of your hanging letters.

This serves as a great backdrop to both celebrate your day and to eliminate confusion when everyone's looking through their summer wedding photos -- they'll know exactly which ones were from your gorgeous outdoor reception! (Another way to use these without making them the focus of your decor: hang them at the entrance, where your welcome sign would be!"

DIY Aisle Flowers

Nothing but a simple DIY flower aisle vase to get the ideas flowing about how to save on your wedding day decorations. This fabric cover flower vase by Ashley Meaders is so simple to put together.

Supplies Needed:

Bygel IKEA container

Spray Mount

Fabric

Twine and/or ribbon

Scissors

Flowers

1. Cut fabric 14"x19"

2. Spray outside the container & rim

3. Tightly wrap fabric against the container and smooth out air bubbles. Tuck the fabric

around the top of the container. Cut any excess fabric in the back making a smooth line.

4. Add twine/ribbon around the back of the container.

5. Add your flower arrangement.

DIY Bridal Bouquet

One great way to save some money with your wedding day plans, is to make your own bouquets. Buying wholesale flowers, and of course flowers in season help. And if you have never made a floral arrangement in your life - I found a great blog post on etsy.com. Brookelynn Morris staff writer for Craftzine offers tips to help design your own arrangement with ease.

Materials Needed:

Flowers

Large clippers

Floral Scissors

28 gauge floral wire

Wire cutters

Floral tape

Rubber bands

3-4 yards of lace and ribbon

Decorative straight pins

For those new to the art of floral arrangements, I recommend practicing these steps & playing around with your color palette ahead of time. You can usually find little deals at your local farmers market on in-season flowers. And just think, practicing only equals lovely little arrangements around your home.

Three Great Pom-Pom DIY Ideas

Lately it seems that DIY pom pom decorations are popping up all over the web. I remember making tissue paper flowers and pom poms when I was about 6 years old. I never would have thought they would make such a great and less expensive way to decorate an event. But they add a very cheerful and festive vibe to the room. And the best thing is, they can be made into whatever color suites your theme. That being said I thought I should share with you a couple of my favorite links to Do-It-Yourself Pompom projects.

First up might be my favorite: Fabric Pom-Poms via the Once Wed Blog. This may run you a little more expensive then the tissue paper poms. To cut cost, think resusable items. If you have left over fabric you can use from previous projects - go for it. You can also shop the sale section at your local fabric store for deals.

This project is simple enough that anyone who knows how to use a glue gun can do it. To view the full instruction sheet, click here!

Second is of course, the queenof do-it-yourself, Martha Stewart's Dahlia Pom-Poms. This project is very easy that I think even the 6 year-old-me could handle this.

Cutting the tips of the paper, gives it the feeling of dahlia petals. So if this is your style or you are just looking to try an easy rainy afternoon project - click here for detailed directions!

And lastly, the impending fall-winter wardrobe change over that will occur too soon - has inspired me to post this pom-pom creation via Ruffled Blog- the Pom Pom Bouquet! This is a great alternative to using real flowers. And it may be just the thing to add to your fall or winter wedding.

But as you can see, this project is not for the lazy Do-it-yourselfer. There are some supplies you will need to purchase in order to pull this off. But the results would be so unique. For instructions on this project, visit Ruffled's original posting.
I'm even thinking that you could add a few vintage broach pieces to this bouquet for a little bling.

A couple of days ago I posted a few tips on what to include on Your Wedding Day Emergency Kit. So I thought it would be a good idea to provide another list of wedding day must-not-forget-to-bring:

What to Delegate

Planning your wedding can at times feel very overwhelming. Especially if you have a giant checklist before you that has barely been started. Well any good leader will tell you - it's time to delegate. Now I know that if you are a control freak or what I like to call myself, 'a detail oriented' person, then you will want to have say in every part of your wedding. And while you may not want anyone but you and your fiance to choose the flower arrangements or your photographer, there are several tasks you can easily delegate among your wedding party, family and friends.

Wedding Favors
Don't be afraid to have some of your friends help you choose your wedding favors. Have them stick to your theme and budget and take the pressure of researching off of you. If you are making your own favors - even better! Throw a little pizza party for your girlfriends and invite them over to help with your craft project or bake cookies for your guests. (Make sure they know that's what the party is for.)

Making the Emergency Kit
Simply give your check list to a bridesmaid and request they pull all these item together for you. A simple trip to the drugstore can pull all this together. Just make sure that this person is someone who will be with you while you get ready - when u will likely need a majority of these items. (Please don't expect them to pay out of pocket though. This little emergency kit should be a part of the misc section of your budget.)

Transportation
  Who is in charge of picking up grandmom? This is something that many couples forget about until last minute. And getting you and your guests from one location to the next can be sometimes be tricky. If you are looking to save some money on transportation, it is still a good idea to have a few people in charge of getting your wedding party around. So you can delegate a few people with reliable cars to be in charge of driving. You will also need someone to help you plan out the easiest route for your guests to follow.
  Even if you decide to rent a bus, van or limo for your guests, having someone (especially if they have already planned their own wedding.) help you find a transportation company will be helpful.
   And let's not forget about grandmom?! You may also need to make sure those elderly guests that do not drive have a way to and from your event. Grandmom may not want to party all night long, so keep that in mind.

Flowers
  You may not want to have someone pick out the arrangements for you. But you may need to have flowers moved from the ceremony site to the reception. This is an easy job to delegate.

Set Up
  So when the day has arrived, there is much to do. And you cannot be at the salon or hotel room getting your hair done and setting up the ceremony and receptions sites at the same time. You may not even be able to approve of the final set up before guest arrive. But there are many people around you that have seen your idea boards and been with you while planning. Unless you have hired a coordinator or your florist to do the set up work for you, it's a good idea to have a handful of trusted friends to work the set up so you can sit and relax. If you have specific ideas, let them know ahead of time. And part of delegating is trusting them to help get it done.

After the wedding day:

Returning the Rented Gear
Make sure you know what arrangements may need to be made regarding rented chairs, tables, sound systems, linens etc. Check with the rental company about when these items need to be returned and who is responsible for that. Also check with your location. They may need to have these items removed that night so they can have the space available for another event. Delegating a wedding party member or close friend to follow up on this after the wedding is very helpful.
Rented gear also includes the tuxedos/suits & shoes to the shop. It's always helpful to have a plan about their return before the wedding day. This way all the guys know what to do with them. Delegating someone be in charge of these items is a definite way to ensure you get your deposits back on any rented gear and for you to head off to your honeymoon without any worries.

Remember, if you are going to delegate, you are giving that person the control. Trust they will take care of it. Breathing down their necks about it won't win you any more favors in the future. Make sure they know you appreciate their help. A little note to thank them can go a long way. You may also want to consider giving a special thank-you speech during the reception to acknowledge all your helpers.
And if you are a super detail oriented person and having trouble letting go, talk with your friends. Consulting friends who have been through this process will give you pointers on what else you can delegate. But remember don't ask for advise unless you are willing to listen.

As the 'Big Day' get closer and closer, there are a million little details that can go running through your head. This includes all the little things that can go wrong. So why not be prepared? A great way to take care of some of the minor mishaps is to create a 'Wedding Day Emergency Kit'.
For years, every time I worked on a photo shoot set I would pack my 'Set Emergency Kit'. For me that included things like mini A-claps, double sided tape, bandages, and safety pins. And I can't tell you how many times I was able to come to the rescue with my little kit. And even today I carry a few safety pins, tissues, mints and bandages in my photo bag to weddings. You never know when you might need to save a bridesmaid from runny makeup or a mom from a runaway hemline.

So here is a list of must-haves in your Wedding Day Emergency Kit:

1. Sewing kit with needle, thread, buttons and safety pins in various sizes.
2. Toupee tape for keeping clothes in place.
3. Scissors
4. Stick-on instant hemming tape.
5. Clear nail polish (for runs) and nail polish in the shade you are wearing.
6. White chalk for masking stains (baby powder and baby wipes also are great to have for this too.)
7. Bandages
8. Blister protection
9. Antacid
10. Breath mints
11. Pain reliever

12. Cotton swabs
13. Blotting papers
14. Tweezers
15. Emery board
16. Lip Balm and a clear lip gloss
17. Mini Tissue packets
18. Bobby pins and hair elastics

20. Powder to help eliminate shine

22. Hairspray (Note: hair spray will help eliminate static on your veil in a pinch.)

Tattoos : To Cover or Not to Cover?

Many people have tattoos nowadays. And a commonly asked question for brides is 'should I cover it up on my wedding day?' Well I say if you still love your body artwork and consider it very much a part of who your are then let it show. There is no point in hiding who you are on your wedding day.

But if you are having a formal wedding or just prefer your grandmother-in-law not know about the giant skull tattoo you have on your back from your renegade days in college - then go ahead and cover. You can choose a dress that will cover over your art. Another way to keep from sacrificing your current fashion choice from your past, is to check out some makeup concealers. The two popular ones I hear about are Dermablend and Covermark. Other popular selections are Secret Camouflage by Laura Mercier and Tattoo Camo.

And as with your makeup and hair, it is always a good idea to test out the product way in advance. Make sure it won't be rubbing off on your dress, the guests you hug or disappear while you bust your moves on the dance floor.

California Mountain Elopement via 100 Layer Cake

I was checking out some of my favorite wedding websites over the weekend - as I am sure some of you were too. And I came across this very unique wedding on the 100 Layer Cake blog. And it wasn't the fact that it was an elopement to the mountainside or her cute pink shoes that made me want to share this wedding - it was her dress! This dress was handmade by the bride and patterned after a deconstructed vintage dress and then crocheted doilies were added as the top layer. This bride was a real trooper - she even had to be sewn into the dress that morning before her wedding.

Planning a Safari Themed Wedding

I've been thinking about themed weddings and what a trend they seem to be. It is a great way to keep your wedding coordinated and give your guests something to look forward to. And there are so many different ways to go with your wedding theme - tea party, love bird, vintage, or tropical destination. And why not safari?! I know, I know- most of you are thinking crazy leopard printed table clothes, big feathered hats, and zebra patterned bridesmaids. I can only imagine how this theme can easily go awry. But there are so many ways to carry out this idea by just keeping it simple.

Location
First and foremost is choosing the right venue - indoors or outdoors. Consider having it at a zoo or african museum or art gallery. Many locations like those do host private parties but often require you purchase wedding insurance and for you to hire an experienced caterer.

Decorations
When selecting your decorations - remember - keep it simple. Choose from shades of brown, tan and white as your base color. You can add accents of red, orange and teal. (think flowers & candles in these colors). Exotic flowers such as calla lilies and other bright colored hues work best. Select table & chair materials made of wood, burlap linen and nudcloth. To enhance the mood, add a few unique wooden sculptures.

What to Wear
If you would like to stick with a white or ivory gown, choose a gown that is loose fitting or simple. Select something made of light weight fabrics - linen and silk. Then add safari influenced accessories - colorful beads, ivory, bracelets from West Africa. Consider tan suits for the groom & groomsmen. If you want to add some color to your wedding party - consider choosing a print for your bridesmaids dresses. And no -I'm not thinking leopard or cheetah. More along the idea of clean floral patterns or solid brighter colored reds or oranges.

Food
Working with a designer to create a unique cake will only help to enhance your safari theme. But stick with decorations that will go with your wedding apparel and venue decor. Hor d'oeuvres should have a traditional african flavor - dried fruits chutneys and crackers and iltong (dried meats) . Included in the meal, consider geelrys (yellow rice with raisins), steamed corn bread and bitter greens salad. Desserts, along with your cake, can include soetkoekies (walnut cookies) koeksisters and brandy soaked fruits. (Click for or some different recipes ideas here.)

Dance
Traditional African music isn't necessary for the entire night, but add some light African jazz during dinner will help set the mood. If you can find it in your budget, a great surprise for your guests, is to hire some dancers to preform a few traditional african dances. (Check with dance schools / universities to help you get a good rate.)

What Questions to ask your Dressmaker

Let's face it, if you are going to invest this much money in a dress, it's a good idea to have the fit you really want. Hiring a seamstress will allow you to enjoy your wedding day without having to give any thought to the dress on your big day. You don't want to be tugging on your dress all day long or worried you will trip over a dress thats too long. So to ensure the right fit, have the dress tailored to your frame. And to help with that, here are a few questions you may need to know to help you out.

When will the dress be ready?

Most dresses will be finished in an average of four to eight months. If your seamsterss is unable to get your dress completed before your wedding day, consider going to another tailor. Appointments for your alterations may need to be made far in advance if their are specific times and dates you need. The last fitting is generally scheduled two weeks before your wedding day. If you are in a rush for your dress, don't be surprised if there is an additional 15-25% rush order fee.

How many fittings are needed?

Most dresses require only three fittings. The exception is for dresses made from scratch which may require several more. During the first fitting, your seamstress will determine what step will need to be done to the dress. For example, is it too long, too short, does the bodice need to be tightened, buttons moved etc. It's a good idea to have your shoes purchased by then & bring them along to the fitting. (You may also want to consider bringing your lingerie to this fitting as well.) The second fitting will allow you to determine if the goals from the last have been met. Additional changes can be made at this fitting. It's often a good idea to bring a friend along for the third fitting. This is when your dress should look like you want it to on your wedding day. So it is a good idea to have someone shown how the dress should bustle etc.

Do the fittings cost extra?

Many stores will offer three fittings in the price when you use their tailor. Designer gowns, however, usually offer an unlimited number of fittings. But make note, not all dress shops offer this. It's alway a good idea to ask up front about this service.

Can I make changes to the dress design?

This will depend on the designer and the dress shop. There are usually limitations to those changes. For example, you may be able to order the dress in a different color or with a different neckline or length. If the answer is a no , you can consider going to a seamstress for your customizations.

What happens if I gain or loose weight after the final fitting?

As long as the changes aren't too drastic, your seamstress should be able to make some last-minute adjustments. If you think there is a good chance you will be gaining or loosing a lot of weight in this timeframe, then it may be a good idea to give your seamstress a heads up. This was she can save extra fabric if necessary. Be sure to check on the additional costs to this.

How do I care for the dress?

Most dress makers will provide instructions on what to do with your dress to ensure it remains in perfect condition until your wedding day. They may also offer advise on where to have the dress cleaned and how to preserve it after your wedding day. (Many dry cleaners offer this service, but make sure you go with one that is well known for this service.)

The Right Wedding Dress for You

With so many beautiful dresses out there to choose form, how do you know where to start? I know it;s important that you find a dress that fits your style but it's even more important that you have a dress that you feel comfortable in. Some brides know when they try a dress on that it's 'the one'. But how do you even know which dresses to try on? Pouring through websites and magazines is a great way to see what is out there. But keep in mind the dress in the magazine you love, may not be the right style for your body type.
I did a little research to find out what the experts suggest works best & what to avoid.

Curvy/Full Figure
So if you are they type of gal to have curves in all the right places - if you want to show them off with a mermaid/trumpet silhouetted gown. Many dress fitting experts recommend the A-line style dress with a drop waist for those who want a more simplified. Designers often pair this shape with a sweet heart neckline. Just be careful not to have a neckline that dives to far down. You want your guests to be looking at your face too.

Pear-Shaped
An A-line cut is also a flattering shape for those of you with pear-shape. The waistline of the dress should be at your natural waistline, to help accentuate your narrow midsection and smooth out the hip line. Avoid clingy fabrics and mermaid skirts and bows along your hip line.

Apple-Shaped
If you want to hide your tummy, search for styles that have beading or tight ruching around the waistline. You will also want to choose a style with a more conservative neckline like a scoop or v-neck. Wide straps on your dress will help to balance out your figure and also allow you to wear a bra without issues. Avoid off the shoulder necklines and too high necklines. And flaunt 'em if you got 'em! Don't be afraid to show off those fantastic legs with a shorter hemline either. (just stay away from a short trumpet skirt. You want to avoid making your best attribute look wider at the knee.)

Petite
Be careful of your hemline. Too long or too short can cause your legs to look shorter then you are. For longer length gowns consider a trumpet skirt that hugs your frame. And for the layered look be sure to stick to light fabrics like lace and tulle. V-shaped necklines help to elongate your torso and give the appearance of height. Check out the sheath, trumpet and a modified A-line gown. Watch out for dresses with a lot of detailing at the hemline. This can cause you to look weighed down. Be sure to avoid heavy looking accessories, big bows and too much jewelry. When selecting your flowers, consider a smaller bouquet, as to not cover up your petite frame.

Tall & Slender
Think simple. If you want to accentuate your lean form, choose a flowing silhouette. Choosing one made of silk will allow your dress to be less formal and add some sex appeal. But if you want to play down your height, choose a dress style with added volume instead. By selecting a defined high-waisted skirt, you will give the illusion of having more curves. For a long sleeved dress, make sure the sleeves fit all the way to your wrist. When if comes to your accessories avoid the obvious - high heels, and super up-do hair style not cause attention to your height.

Busty
As a bride you want people to notice your pretty face. Busty girls should look for scoop neck gowns to help display your cleavage but not show off too much. For a strapless gown, consider one with a slight dip (sweetheart) and not a plunging neckline. You want to feel comfortable out on the dance floor, and not need to worry about constantly pulling up your dress or worse - falling out. You also want to avoid choosing a straight line for your strapless dress & looking like you have a uniboob (yes I said it!) So avoid ruching, satin and silk along your bustline.

Small Chested
Extra fabric at the top helps, so check out dresses with a ruched bodice and halters with some extra padding. Having a good bra can help add a nice push up when it comes to strapless or backless dresses. If you can't find the right bra, consider the self-adhesive silicone cups.

Plus-Sized / Curvy All Over
Empire dresses were made for you. With a waistline that flows just under the bust line to a nice soft A-line to the floor. Avoid waistlines that start directly underneath the chest. Instead choose a dress with a band if fabric under the bust line and a skirt that starts under that. Avoid any type of pleats and a too loose fabric. The dress should have some structure and provide a slimming shape while appearing light. Accessories should be understated.

There are so any little details that go in to planning for your wedding day. But don't forget about one small detail after the Big Day. - you are now a Mrs. ! Once the marriage certificate is official, it's always a good idea to have several copies of this document. You are going to need at least one copy to help you change your name. And I found a great website to help you with this process - MissNowMrs.com . All you have to do is create an account by answering some general questions, fill out some forms and then file your change of name!

(Note: If you don't want to stand on line at the county office for a copy of your marriage certificate, you can obtain one from this site for a small fee)

This makes it so easy to determine how much you will spend & help you stick to your budget.

I love handmade items and naturally Etsy.com is one of my favorite resources to find new artists. I recently posted my weekly Etsy finds on eco-friendly items. One of the artists featured was Foosie Design . I love her 'stuff'. This is a custom stationary store that is best described as casual elegance.

Founded in 2008, the Foosie Design studio based out of Eugene, Oregon but the online store allows the Foosie stationary to reach across the country. The name stems from an old irish word that means 'sweet treat'. And not only are the invitations just that, they are also made in a very earth-friendly and cost efficient way. Made from 30-100% recycled papers , Foosie Design stationary is printed on an energy efficient printer using recycled toner cartridges. Even the cut-off paper is left behind and re-used as scrap paper or recycled. And small details, even down to the shipping drop off is eco-friendly, as daily trips to the local FedEx hub are made via bike to help reduce the amount of fuel wasted on scheduled pick ups. All these thoughtful steps make these invitations an eco-friendly choice.

The dress is a great place to start with. To accomplish the hollywood gam - take a look at bias-cut dresses, v-beck lines and fish-tail hems, lace and satin add a very classic looked when paired with a set of chandelier earrings. For your hair think - classic Grace Kelly, & Veronica Lake.

Wedding Insurance : Do You Need It?

Insurance? For my wedding? Really?!? Many of you may never have even heard of such a thing. But it's out there and some locations require you purchase this in order to use their facilities.

So what is wedding insurance?
There are several different form of wedding insurance. Your insurance provider can give you more details & help you determine what is best for you. But the insurance itself is exactly that- insurance for your wedding. The cost of this is usually around the $100 price point with the average wedding costing about $20,000. But since the insurance coverage varies- the price does too. So it can also cost up to $600 for a more expensive policy.

When would I need it?

For the $100 you would likely spend, insurance is there for the 'just in case'. And although it is unlikely, it's better safe then sorry. Examples of what can happen include - your partner dies, bad weather, your family cannot make it to your wedding, and your location burns down. There are many more reasons and not likely to happen. But any and all of these reason can easily ruin a wedding.

So whether the $100 is worth it to save you from the unlikely & save your $20,000 investment, that is up to you and your partner? If you decide it's for you, be sure to shop around for insurance before making your decision.

Backyard Wedding Themes

Ok so you have decided you want to have a backyard wedding. What is your personal style? (and by 'your' I mean you and your fiance). Here are a few theme ideas to help get you started.

Barbecue

This theme tends to be more laid back. Your guests will definitely look forward to this event for a more casual style. Hiring an all-in-one caterer to handle the event will help make it run smoothly. Decorations ideas include tiki torches, edible treats and hot sauces, table clothes. Food can include anything barbecued - even chili, & other picnic foods. Read here some helpful tips on planning your inexpensive bbq theme.

Tea Party

Having a tea party theme will give the feeling of a very intimate event. When decorating think: teapots, wildflowers, danty plates and pretty linens, soft colors, candles, lace, ribbons and handkerchiefs. And of course tea & cookies & cupcakes! Serve sandwiches and other scrumptious finger foods.

Sites such as the Tea Pot Shoppe can help you find these items. And if you love the garage sale scene - you may be able to pick up a few great used items for a fraction of the cost.

Nature

This theme is an obvious one for an outdoor event. But making sure you have plenty of plants may add to your budget if you don't already have this available. On the plus side you can choose any colors you like. Using paper lanterns is a great way to light (although make sure you have enough so guests aren't tripping on their way in and out.) Other decorations include flower petals, flower vases, watering cans, and plantable seed party favors.

Hawaiian Luau
Similar to the bbq theme, this is a great way to have a casual celebration. Guests should wear flip-flops & shorts with hawaiian shirts and sundresses. Decorations include flower leis, tiki torches, orchids and tropical flowers, surf boards, sand & island music. This is a great way to bring the tropics to you, if you don't have the budget to plan a destination wedding.

Backyard Wedding Tips

   A backyard wedding you say? Whether you are trying to save on your budget, looking for an earth-friendly place to have your wedding or just have a really great backyard (or a friend's that you can use), having a backyard wedding can be a more intimate place to hold your ceremony. So here are a few tips to help you out in your decision.

Consider the Space
   Your backyard may be a fantastic backdrop, out there are limitations to the number of guests you can have. May sure this plan is realistic for the space you have. There will need to be plenty of room for chairs and tables. And a spot for dancing, if you choose. Also consider how many bathrooms are available to accommodate everyone.

Equipment
   Stuff. Yes you will need to consider all the stuff that you will need for your wedding. I'm not talking about the dress and cake. You will need to budget for rental of chairs and tables, linens and buffet tables and a sound system. Factor in these costs before you start to plan. You will also need to consider electricity and accessibility to it. You may also need a generator. So after all these items are factored in - it may be cheaper to book someplace else that can provide all this.

Food and Drinks
   Handling food and drinks can often be a cost-saving. But many couples will find a day that goes much smoother if they hire a caterer to handle all the food preparation, service and clean up.

Weather
   Your backyard may be filled with awesome flowers in the spring, but does it rain often that time of year? Weather is always a factor to consider when planning an outdoor event. Make sure you have a backup plan just in case Mother Nature has a different idea. (I have been to a few weddings when there was no Plan B. And finding a tent big enough in the 11th hour for 100 guests was impossible. - I was left standing in the rain with a kind guest holding an umbrella so I could get some good images.) And I know it sounds funny - but be careful of the sun. You want to be sure that the sun isn't going to blind your wedding guests or you while you are saying your 'I do's'. Offering your guests sunscreen and paper umbrellas are a great way to help protect your guests and add a little style at the same time.

Pets and Pests
  If you are planning a wedding at your home, it's important to consider your furry friends and what all this commotion will do to them. If they are people lovers and good with guests and the social scene, then having them at your party is up to you. If, however, they are not, it may be a good idea to make arrangements for a quieter place for them to hang for the day. Also if your four-legged friends are staying - don't forget to have someone feed & walk them at their usual time. This will help keep them on some type of schedule and lessen the chance for unwanted accidents or misbehavior. (You may also want to consider your neighbors pets. The last thing you want is your neighbors dog howling during your wedding vows. See 'Permission below'.)
  Be aware. Often outdoors equals bugs. Make sure you have considered this in your plans. You may want to have citronella candles and bug spray on hand if necessary.

Permission
   You should also check with your local government or complex association to make sure there won't be any issues with noise ordinances and parking. The last thing you want is the neighbors calling the cops on your party. Speaking of which, it would be a great idea to let your neighbors know what you are planning. You can even invite them over for a drink at the reception as a nice gesture.

Clean Up
  Yes, having a party at your house means that you or someone you designate will have to clean up the mess. Often if you have rented your equipment, the service company will provide delivery/pick up (make sure you know that up front.) And caterers should also be in charge of cleaning up after their service. But don't forget all the little things that will need to be done once those big items are gone. Someone will need to be in charge of all the miscellaneous cleaning before (including lawn maintenance) and after the wedding. So unless you want to do it yourself or have a trusted friend, you may want to consider adding a cleaning service to your budget.
